The Top 5 Can't-Miss Things To Do and See in Torrey Pines, California
If you are making your way to Torrey Pines, then you’ve got a lot of things to do and see when you get into the area. But it’s a very large place, and if you want to make the most out of your trip while you are there, then you need to check out these 5 things that you can not miss whenever you go to Torrey Pines!
1. The Torrey Pines Hiking Trails
Whether you are a Torry Pines hiking enthusiast, someone who just loves to walk, or a person who wants to spend some time in nature, you will find everything you need at the Torry Pines hiking trails that are a part of the Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. Now, you can either park at one of the three paid parking lots to get in, or do some extra hiking by walking from the Torrey Pines State Beach.
The Reserve is open at 7:!5 PST every morning, and it closes whenever the sun sets. This can be as early as 5:00 pm in the winter or as late as 8:00 pm in the summer. If you are unsure you can find the closing time on a sign at the entrance.
Once you have arrived, you can pick from one of the six hiking trails that can go from as short as 300 feet to 1.4 miles. They also all go over all types of terrain, from an easy trail filled with flowers and pine trees, or one trail that is basically a steep incline from start to finish. If you don’t want to do any of these, then you can go to the Torrey Pines reserve extension and find four more trails that you can walk around.
Still, just make sure that you understand that this is a reserve and not a park. Most of the plants in a reserve are endangered or protected, so keeping them undisturbed and safe is the prime goal of the Torrey Pines Hiking Trail. As long as you follow the rules you will be okay, but not following the rules can lead you to a hefty fine.
2. Go To The Torrey Pines State Nature Trail
This protected nature landscape is an area perfect for the outdoors enthusiasts. Not only are the very rare Torrey Pines trees, which you can only see here at Torry Pines, here, but you can also see one Southern California’s last remaining salt marshes and the waterfowl refuges for migrating birds during the winter.
Additionally, you can also see coyotes, bobcats, and foxes inside of the park. Plus, the proximity to the coastline means that you can go atop the cliffs and also see grey and humpback whales if you come at the right time and keep your eyes out.
The nature trails are everywhere, and if you are more into flora than fauna, then you can walk the Torrey Pines hiking trail and also see some of the area’s most protected and endangered plants and flowers. Just make sure to follow the rules of the trail so you can keep them from becoming even more endangered!
3. The Torrey Pines Golf Course
The 36 hole golf course, consisting of 18 holes in the North and 18 in the South, are all built so you can enjoy the famous views that the Torrey Pines Golf Course is known for all season long. Whether you are coming to the course for the San Diego City Amateur Golf Championships that is hosted in June, or the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open, or you are just coming to play your own game on the field, then you will find something for every single golf lover here.
Even if you play a poor golf game, you can still enjoy the views of the ocean! You can also walk through the expertly designed 7,804 yards of the Torrey Pines Golf Course, especially if you are a fan of the celebrated golf course designer Rees Jones, who was the person that redesigned the course to what it is now.
Finally, no matter how your game goes, you can find one of the western United States’ largest golf shops. It holds golf merchandise, golf items for rent, and even individual golf lessons that are taught by some of golf’s greatest pros!
4. Go To The Torrey Pines State Beach
Much like the old song, you can take the high road or the low road to get to this beach! The low road will take you to the beach right off of the highway, where you can find all the standard beach amenities. A place for young children to swim and play by the lagoon, bathrooms and showers, lifeguards, and plenty of space for people to swim and enjoy being on the beach. The north section is perfect for the traditional beachgoers, but for those who like to be nude while on the beach, or the surfers who want to catch the swells of the ocean, they can go south.
If you end up taking the high road, then you can go to the Torrey Pines Natural Reserve Park, which has a place where you can look down on the coast and experience the view of the beach from above. Plus, you can start and end your journey at the beach with the aptly named beach trail that goes through the park.
No matter how you get there, you can bring food, water, and your beach supplies to the Torrey Pines State Beach and spend the day with a blue ocean and white burning sands.
5. Shop Until You Drop At The Torrey Hills Center
If you need something, then the Torrey Hills Center is going to have it. You can grab lunch at a great San Diego food spot, where local favorites sit with national chains. You can also find your fitness at dog parks, fitness outlets, or even financial centers too. The area also has dentists, doctors, grocery stores, and even a post office. Plus, you can find lots of art as you walk around, and it’s even friendly for your dogs as well. No matter what you need, you will find it at this center, and even if you don’t need anything you can still spend a day or two walking around the area.

Finally, the one thing you should always see in Torrey Pines is the Torrey Pine tree. It is a critically endangered species that grows only in the coastal San Diego County. and on the Santa Rosa Island and the San Miguel island. So if you get the chance to see this beautiful pine trees, then make sure to do so, because you won’t see them anywhere else.
