How Does California Law Define a “Limousine?”
Depending on where you live, laws may alter ever-so-slightly when it comes to how vehicles are defined. A limousine (or “limo”), for example, is not necessarily the same in Michigan as it is in Arizona. The state of California has fairly strict regulations when it comes to defining limousines and regulating limo usage.
According to the state legislation, a “‘Limousine’ means any sedan or sport utility vehicle, of either standard or extended length, with a seating capacity of not more than 10 passengers…” And this includes the driver. The state also recognizes this service as a “transportation of passengers for hire on a prearranged basis.”
One of the more unique aspects of California’s vehicle code (in relation to limos) is the fact that it also defines modified limousines, which refers to “any vehicle that has been modified, altered, or extended in a manner that increases the overall wheelbase of the vehicle…” which is done to “accommodate additional passengers.” Not all state legislation identifies modified limousines as a separate vehicle type. This is important because it can affect how frequently these vehicles are inspected.
Limo Types and Costs
There are a number of different vehicle types that fall under the definition of a “limousine.” A town car, for example, can be a limousine if it is used to transport passengers on a for-hire basis. However, when most people hear the word “limousine,” they are most likely thinking of one of three main styles of vehicle.
The classic stretch limousine. This is often what people think of first, with its sleek, elongated shape and dark-tinted windows. In the United States, these are commonly rented for formal events such as weddings or proms.
The Hummer / SUV limousine. Similar in size and overall shape to the stretch limousine, an SUV limo is typically boxier in design and rests higher off the ground. These have a more modern appearance and are particularly loved for events such as bachelor or bachelorette parties.
The party bus. Depending on the state you live in, a party bus may or may not be defined as a limousine. The state of California does not include buses in their description of a limousine. However, when you traditionally think of rented vehicles, this one is a common option for parties with a large number of people. It can include television screens, dancing poles, and a variety of refreshments.
The overall cost of a limousine is going to differ depending on the amount of people the vehicle can seat as well as the features of the specific vehicle itself. Traditionally, limo costs in the San Diego area can run anywhere between $60 per hour and $300 per hour (or more). Depending on the service you choose, these hourly costs may or may not include refreshments. While Hollywood would have us believe that every limousine comes with a free bottle of champagne, this is not necessarily the case. It’s always better to double check what is included with your limousine rental prior to signing.

Finding the Best Limo Service in San Diego
Not sure where to start looking for a good San Diego limousine service? Word of mouth is always a great way to go. In today’s digital era, the majority of companies have some kind of presence online (in the form of a website) along with social media. If you see a company that interests you, see what people are saying online. Google My Business can be another great resource to see how well (or on the other hand, how badly) a company is rated.
